Gaby Welch
Filmmaker | Editor | Producer
Gaby is a filmmaker, producer, and editor who works primarily on science and natural history films.
Gaby was born in Alaska and lived in 7 different states/territories by 18 years old. She grew up with a love of the outdoors, exploring every corner of her backyard everywhere she lived.
Spending her childhood outside led her to pursue a degree in Recreational Administration from Texas State University, focusing specifically on outdoor recreation.
After graduation, Gaby spent 4 years as an environmental educator, eventually going back to school to study Biology with a concentration in Coastal Ecology at the College of Coastal Georgia. Afterwards, she completed a year of coursework in the MFA program in Science and Natural History Filmmaking at Montana State University. She now owns her own editing company.
About Me
I am a filmmaker, producer, and editor based in Bozeman, Montana.
Much of my work is focused on science and natural history. I also work in fiction film, content creation, and marketing. I enjoy creative storytelling in all mediums and find it exciting to adapt my skills to my clients’ needs.
I have three main values as a filmmaker: education, diversity, and accessibility.
I value education. I recognize my privilege in having lived in so many places and learned about the nature, culture, and history of the places I lived. I want to be a part of helping everyone to have these kinds of wide-ranging experiences, even when they don’t get to experience them first-hand.
My background as a mixed-race Puerto Rican person has informed the way I interact with the world and the way the world interacts with me. I consider myself privileged to have felt minimal impact by the lack of racial diversity I saw on screens in my childhood. I was unaware of the differences between myself and the people I grew up watching. As I grew older, that bubble I lived in popped, and I was unable to ignore the glaring gaps in representation of different people and experiences on screen. As a filmmaker, I see it as my responsibility to promote diverse representation in my films and work on projects that promote the same as a producer and editor.
As a disabled person, I have a deep interest in accessibility in film and media. I am constantly learning and seeking information on how to make my work accessible to audiences with different accessibility needs, whether through audio descriptions, subtitles, content warnings, or other accommodations.
